Bit of methanol injection will help keep your intake valves cleaner. Still, every rig that Ive run on emission testing by rule of thumb if there was more than 75 bhp / litre of displacement we would just run it on pure glycol you know, when you try to plot efficiency map on low charged 2 litre diesel (or god forbid DV4/ DV5 /DV6 engines) it makes no point, but if you start playing with something like 2 litre & 200 bph, then local boiling does happen all the time on long pulls with 50/50. A tune and bolt-ons will take the B58 into the 400whp+ range; outstanding for a 3.0 L engine, but nothing insane compared to BMW's other inline-6 turbo engines. Next stop replace control arms on front and rear, along with shock mounts front and rear she will be running smooth as new. Stupid technicians, or cheap skates that mix coolant with distilled water cause cooling system boiling point to fall. Was stock. Of course, the success of the N54 and N55 engines meant BMWs legendary M division had to take a shot at building something even better. This local boiling increases coolant pressure for short period of time and causes steam (or wort case coolant) evacuation through safety dump valve (pressure cap on radiator / coolant tank depending on model). I had the 4.2 I6 in both my 1975 Landcruiser (FJ40) and my 1978 Jeep CJ-7. I took my car to the dealership, they did pressure system check, but they didnt find any leaks. It's worth a shot. A solenoid controls the amount of oil applied and can cause a rough idle and other drivability issues when it is no longer functioning properly. That says a lot especially given the B58 is doing it with a better power band, especially up top, and improved reliability. About other part of your comment. Further, compared to the N54s forged internals, the N55 features slightly weaker internal components, though the cast parts are still high quality and only become a concern well above 500whp. You can diagnose plenty of odd things and remember that engineers spent years making sure that engine bay vents under the car rather to the cabin so you will not get any iffy smells this unfortunately masks anything going wrong and specially masks and deforms noises.
